About Brodhead Watershed Association:

The Brodhead Watershed Association (BWA) is a non-profit environmental organization dedicated to protecting and improving water resources and the environment in the Brodhead and Cherry creek watershed. The BWA assists municipalities, residents, businesses and groups with protecting natural resources through education, workshops, seminars, public programs, stream monitoring and baseline data collection and stream cleanups.

About ForEvergreen:

The ForEvergreen Nature Preserve is a community space owned by Stroud Township dedicated to connecting people, land, and water through recreation and education.  The 40-acre former golf course is now a nature and fishing preserve open to the public. Bordered by the Brodhead Creek, the Preserve protects this important source of drinking water. Trout fishing here has been famous for generations and this exact stretch of the Brodhead is known as the birthplace of fly fishing in America.  The creek’s clear, pure waters are home to naturally-reproducing native trout. Protecting this land protects scenic quality and wildlife while helping to protect drinking water safe for thousands of people downstream.  The preserve is currently enthusiastically used by citizens to fish, walk their dogs, run, do photography, watch the eagles in their nest onsite, and delight in sightings of salamanders, bluebirds, dragonflies, and frogs. Schools use the trails for 5K training and competition. Young mothers push jogging strollers, older couples stroll arm-in-arm.

About the Brodhead Creek Heritage Center:

Brodhead Watershed Association and Pocono Heritage Land Trust are partnering with Stroud Township in a campaign to make ForEvergreen Nature Preserve a natural hub of community life.  The Brodhead Creek Heritage Center is a key component of this effort. The existing building at the Preserve, formerly a golf clubhouse, cannot be salvaged.  A 3,000 square-foot nature, culture and heritage center is planned to replace it, to advance the goal of helping children, their parents, and grandparents connect with nature.

In addition to providing much needed office space for PHLT and BWA the Center will also house space for educational displays of native birds, mammals, fish, reptiles, amphibians and plants, hands-on science programs, and public and private talks, shows and events. The life cycle of Pocono brook trout (the state fish) will be featured, and fly-tying and fly fishing lessons offered. Kid-friendly displays of how water “recycles” will be installed, including the ever-popular chance to get wet!  A permanent exhibit will be The Story of the Brodhead: Birthplace of American Fly Fishing, highlighting this stretch of the Brodhead and its pivotal, historic role.
